Lurie Garden in All Its Glory!
Scott Stewart, Director of the Lurie Garden, Chicago
On an area of a mere 5 acres in Millennium Park, Lurie Garden exhibits cutting-edge design, responsible gardening practices. The garden displays visual interest throughout all the seasons with key plants in planned areas showcasing bold design, dramatic form, and intimate spaces. One highlight is that the designers have allowed a hedge to grow and be maintained as a 15-foot-high “shoulder” hedge supporting the symbolic Carl Sandburg’s famous description of the “City of Big Shoulders“. With the blending of native and non-native plants, Lurie Garden provides a healthy habitat for the appetite of wildlife and people.
Our speaker, Scott Stewart, Director of the Lurie Garden, will describe how this beautiful urban oasis emerges from a harmonious blend of symbolism, landscape masterpiece design, and ecological sensitivity. Scott has a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chemistry from Illinois College and a doctoral degree in Ecology and Horticulture from the University of Florida. He has a deep passion for connecting plants, people, and places—subjects that drive his interest in public gardens and parks as settings to teach about the natural world.
